I was born in 1961 in Glasgow and was raised by young parents, right through the mod era. I loved the way my mother and Aunts dressed, the way they did their hair, their makeup, everything. I was (according to my mum) dancing to soul music as soon as I was able to stand my back against something and bob about.
In late 1978 I was sent to London by my work on a six week course, totally uninterested in the clothing styles of the time, I was a rebel. I was a punk. In london I saw a couple of people who would introduce me to my life's passion, they were mods. By the time I came back from London I had a suitcase full of new (well second hand) clothes, a new style and a new attitude. I suppose it was a bit scary at first, I had never seen any mods in Glasgow and I was most definitely a townie. I didn't care, I loved it. I adapted fast and with my background knowledge, had it pegged in no time at all.
Within 6 months I started to meet mods in Glasgow and the scene just went from there. It was massive. We all had a common attitude and lifestyle. I had some of the best times of my life during these times. My life took a turn in 1981 when I gave birth to my daughter. By 1984 it was becoming blatently obvious that I couldn't continue with my lifestyle with a little kid. I walked away from the best days of my life and my friends.
During those times it was so easy to get the gear. All the flea markets and second hand shops had piles of the stuff and they wanted rid of it because it was so old. We were getting originals from as little as 50p. I also had a little nack of being able to watch old 60's films and when I saw a dress I liked, I was able to immitate it. Before long I had a stall in the local fela market where I would sell out old stuff I had already worn. The stall was a bit of a meeting point too at times. I loved those days and never forgot the good times and the brilliant people I knew back then.
Now that my kids are all grown up, I have my life back to myself. I met up with a few of my old mates from back then and found out that the mod scene is still alive and well in Glasgow. Young and old mods mix together and we have regular events we attend.
Now here's the point of this wee story. I was searching the internet for gear as it's so hard to come by in second hand shops and markets these days. I discovered that there were very few good vintage shops for mods, I ordered from the states and it took up to four weeks to get here. Most of the time the clothes smell like dead rats have been sleeping on them and generally there wasn't much in the way of a good mod oriented site.
I decided to start my wee stall back up again, not in the market but right here on the net. Selling stuff and having a general place to hang out and find out about events, just like the old days. I'm providing free links to mod related events all over the UK. If you have an event you want advertised, even a regular night, just mail me with the details. Anything of interest to mods, just drop me a line and I'll get it up there for you.
I won't link indie bands or anything else that isn't mod related, I will check you out, trust me. Scooter ride outs, weekenders, 60's nights, scooter shops, gigs, anything mod related. If you have a site on the net that's for mods, then get in touch, of course you would have to link me too. You don't have to have a site to get an event listed here but it would help people to find out more about your event.
I don't care about making money from this. I would like to get back the cash I've put out and earn enough from sales to pay for the hosting but other than that, this is a hobby . I will charge what it costs me to buy the clothes, adding on a little extra for the dry cleaning and a couple of pounds to cover the domain hosting.
So why don't you bookmark this page and use it as a drop in, just hang out with me and read through all the links. Find out about stuff that's going on in your area.
Oh! and just one more thing 'KEEP THE FAITH'.
